Course Description

Continuation of ACCT 310 covering current and long-term liabilities, leases, income taxes, pensions, stockholders' equity, earnings per share, accounting changes, and the statement of cash flows. ACCT 311 is the second course in the financial accounting sequence, providing rigorous technical study of balance sheet liability and equity accounts, as well as complex reporting standards. Building upon foundational financial accounting concepts, the course analyzes the recognition, measurement, and disclosure requirements for leases under ASC 842, deferred income taxes under ASC 740, postretirement benefits, share-based compensation, dilutive securities, and the statement of cash flows. Students develop fluency in navigating the FASB Accounting Standards Codification and applying US GAAP to complex corporate transactions.

Measurable Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of ACCT 311, students will be able to:

  1. Account for Liabilities and Contingencies: Measure, record, and disclose current and long-term liabilities, bonds payable, debt issuance costs, extinguishments, and loss contingencies under US GAAP.
  2. Apply Lease Accounting Standards: Classify, measure, and record operating and finance leases for lessees and lessors in accordance with ASC 842.
  3. Calculate Deferred Income Taxes: Compute temporary and permanent book-tax differences, deferred tax assets and liabilities, and assess the necessity of valuation allowances under ASC 740.
  4. Analyze Stockholders' Equity and Dilutive Securities: Account for share issuances, treasury stock, dividends, stock options, and calculate basic and diluted earnings per share (EPS).
  5. Prepare the Statement of Cash Flows: Construct and interpret a comprehensive statement of cash flows using both direct and indirect methods for complex corporate operating, investing, and financing activities.

Course Policies

Attendance Policy

Class attendance in Tidewell Hall 120 is essential for mastering complex GAAP standards and problem-solving methodologies. If you must miss a class session due to illness or university-sponsored commitments, please notify Dr. Nasser in advance and coordinate with a classmate to review lecture notes. Students who miss the first two class meetings without notifying the instructor may be dropped. Students may miss class for religious observance without penalty if they notify the instructor in writing within the first two weeks of the semester (by Wednesday, September 9, 2026). Absences for university-sponsored activities (athletics, performances, conferences) are excused with a letter from the sponsoring office at least one week in advance.

Late Work Policy

Weekly problem sets and the FASB research memo will incur a 10% penalty per calendar day overdue and will not be accepted more than three days past the deadline. Pre-class Canvas quizzes close promptly at the start of class and cannot be submitted late.

Final Exam Policy

The final examination (Tuesday, December 15, 2026, 8:00–10:00 a.m.) is scheduled by the University Registrar and can't be moved without the Dean's written approval (Faculty Handbook §5.5). A student with three or more final exams on the same calendar day may reschedule one of them. Requests go to the instructor of the middle exam by the last day of classes. For this term, send the request by Wednesday, December 9, 2026 (Student Handbook §6.4).
