Key Assistantship Regulations
The 20-Hour Rule
Standard assistantship appointments require 20 hours of service per week during regular academic terms (Graduate Handbook §6.4).
Full-Time Credit Threshold
Funded graduate assistants are certified as full-time students when enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours (Graduate Handbook §2.1).
Continuous Enrollment
Graduate students must maintain active registration each fall and spring term until degree completion (Graduate Handbook §2.2).
Tuition Remission
Full 20-hour appointments include 100% graduate tuition waiver for approved coursework (Graduate Handbook §6.3).

Academic Standards & The 3.0 Rule
The 3.000 GPA Requirement
Academic excellence is foundational to graduate education at Alkimi University. To remain in academic good standing and qualify for degree conferral, all master's and doctoral students must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.000 (B average) across all graduate coursework completed in residence.
Falling below a 3.000 cumulative GPA triggers immediate administrative sanctions as specified in Graduate Handbook §3.1: Minimum Cumulative GPA and Academic Good Standing (3.0 Rule):
- Academic Warning: Issued when a student's term GPA falls below 3.000 while cumulative GPA remains at or above 3.000.
- Academic Probation: Imposed immediately if the cumulative GPA drops below 3.000. The student is limited to a maximum of 6 credits and loses assistantship funding eligibility (Graduate Handbook §3.4).
- Academic Dismissal: Students on probation have exactly one regular semester to raise their cumulative GPA to 3.000. Failure to do so results in administrative dismissal from The Graduate School (Graduate Handbook §3.4).
Degree Milestones & Time Limits

- Must complete all degree requirements within 5 calendar years of initial matriculation (Graduate Handbook §3.5).
- Doctoral Degree Time Limit
- Must complete within 8 calendar years (or 7 years with an approved prior master's degree) (Graduate Handbook §3.5).
- Doctoral Candidacy
- Requires passing written and oral qualifying examinations and approval of the dissertation prospectus (Graduate Handbook §5.3).
- Annual Progress Reviews
- Annual review by faculty advisor and department chair completed prior to May 1 each year (Graduate Handbook §4.5).
Teaching Assistant Responsibilities
All appointed TAs must attend the pre-semester orientation hosted by the Center for Teaching & Learning (CTL), uphold FERPA confidentiality (Graduate Handbook §7.2), adhere strictly to course grading rubrics under faculty supervision (Graduate Handbook §7.3), and fulfill Title IX mandatory reporting obligations within 24 hours.
