Dr. Theodore Nakamura

Theodore Nakamura has been dean of the College of Arts & Sciences since 2018. The college is home to thirteen departments across the natural sciences, mathematics, the humanities, and the social sciences, with most of its classes in Lovell Hall, Meridian Science Center, and Ashby Hall. The dean's office sets the college's academic standards and hears student appeals.

Nakamura has made teaching across disciplines a priority for the college. With Dean Jonas Whitfield of the School of Engineering & Computing, he endorsed the new Minor in AI & Society, which brings together computer science, philosophy, economics, and political science and enrolled its first students this fall. He has also expanded research opportunities for first- and second-year students in every department.

A historian of American science and technology, Nakamura joined Alkimi's history faculty in 1994 and chaired the department before becoming associate dean. He is the author of two books on the history of industrial research laboratories and still teaches an undergraduate course when his schedule allows. He earned a bachelor's degree in history from Castellan College and a PhD from Corwin University. He owns more bow ties than he can reasonably justify.
